After Thanksgiving weekend record, box office now looks like a turkey

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - One week after shattering the record for the biggest Thanksgiving weekend, the box office is entering a post-turkey, pre-"Hobbit" dead zone.

Dominated by turkey day leftovers, this week's top ten will look a lot like last week's - only with much smaller numbers. The studios have pulled back, convinced that many potential moviegoers will be busy shopping for the holidays. There are only two wide openers - the gritty Brad Pitt crime thriller "Killing Them Softly" and the low-budget horror film "The Collection."

The only wide opener set for the following week is FilmDistrict's "Playing for Keeps," so things could remain static until December 14, when Warner Bros. rolls out its blockbuster "The Hobbit." "Twilight: Breaking Dawn - Part 2" is a good bet to three-peat, but might not hit $20 million. After that it looks like "Skyfall," which is in its fourth week, "Rise of the Guardians," "Lincoln" and "Life of Pi," with Ang Lee's 3D epic the best bet to break out.

"Breaking Dawn 2" is still going strong. It crossed the $600 million mark in worldwide box office this week, with the vast majority of that coming from abroad. It has taken in nearly $235 million domestically but that's been overshadowed by the $365 million the film has brought in during the same period from overseas

"Killing Them Softly," which premiered in competition at the Cannes Film Festival, was to have opened on October 19. Distributor the Weinstein Company pushed it to this weekend, to move it away from "Paranormal Activity 4" and distance it from Ben Affleck's "Argo," which had opened a week earlier.

Andrew Dominik ("Chopper") directs and wrote the screenplay for "Killing Them Softly," which is based on the novel "Cogan's Trade" by George V. Higgins. Ray Liotta, James Gandolfini and Richard Jenkins star in the hit-man tale, which is rated R.

It's already opened in Australia and several European countries, and has taken in nearly $15 million, led by the U.K. with $4.4 million. Analysts see "Killing Them Softly," which will be in about 2,000 theaters, landing in the $12 million range, but feel it could also surprise.

"It's still Brad Pitt, and he has a following," Exhibitor Relations senior analyst Jeff Bock told TheWrap. "Movies like this, where a guy like Pitt isn't playing the good guy, are kind of a wild card and I wouldn't be shocked if this made it to $15 million."

"Killing Them Softly" premiered in competition at the Cannes Film Festival and the critics were impressed. It has an 81 percent positive rating on Rotten Tomatoes. It was produced by Megan Ellison's Annapurna Pictures for around $15 million.

The other wide opener, R-rated horror thriller "The Collection," is a sequel to LD Films' 2009 film "The Collector," which grossed less $10 million worldwide. It stars Emma Fitzpatrick and Josh Stewart, who returns from the first film.

Marcus Dunstan directs and co-wrote with Patrick Melton. The critics are unimpressed; it has a 53 percent positive rating on Rotten Tomatoes..

"Skyfall," the 23rd and highest-grossing of the James Bond films, has just crossed $800 million worldwide and has a shot at becoming the year's third billion-dollar earner worldwide, following Disney and Marvel's "The Avengers" and "Dark Knight Rises" from Warner Bros.

The 23rd Bond film has made $228 million so far in the U.S. and another $572 million abroad, so it will probably clear $300 million domestically and $600 million at the foreign box office. Japan and China are the only significant overseas markets left to go, so they will likely determine whether "Skyfall" hits a billion or not. Either way, it's the highest-grossing 007 movie of all time.

DreamWorks Animation's "Rise of the Guardians" could use a good week. Stock in the company was off more than 5 percent this week in the wake of its disappointing $32.6 million five-day Thanksgiving haul of the CG-animated "Guardians," which was produced at a cost of $145 million. Its holiday theme and "A" CinemaScore offer some hope that it will play through the holidays, and these next two weeks will be telling.

Disney and Fox will try to maintain momentum with their Oscar hopefuls.

"Life of Pi" surprised analysts and Fox executives with its $30 million haul over the Thanksgiving weekend. Close attention will be paid to the size of the film's drop from its opening weekend, which will be an indicator of its word-of-mouth bump and long-term prospects. It will again be in 2,902 theaters, 2,633 of which will be 3D. In its first weekend, 3D screens accounted for 68 percent of its grosses.

Distributor Disney will again have the DreamWorks historical drama "Lincoln" in about 2,018 theaters as it heads into its fourth weekend. Its per-screen average improved to $12,398 last week, despite the addition of more than 200 locations. It's probably expecting too much for another rise, but "Lincoln" should be among the leaders again.

Boehner Responds To Obama On Fiscal Cliff - Business Insider

Courtesy of CSPAN

House Speaker John Boehner said Friday that that there is a "stalemate" in negotiations over how to avoid the fiscal cliff.

"There's a stalemate, let's not kid ourselves," he told reporters at a Capitol Hill press conference.?"Right now, we're almost nowhere."?

Boehner's remarks came in response to the White House's proposal?for a budget deal, a Democratic wish list that includes $1.6 trillion in tax increases over 10 years, $50 billion in stimulus spending, home mortgage refinancing, and a permanent end to Congressional control over the debt ceiling.?

"The White House hasn't yet made a serious proposal," Boehner said, adding that while Republicans are willing to increase revenues, Obama's plan to raise taxes on the wealthy is "the wrong approach."?

Republicans are willing to "negotiate in good faith," Boehner said, but their "original framework stands."?

There are signs, however, that Republicans have become increasingly resigned to the idea of letting the rest of the Bush tax cuts expire. At least three Republican members of Congress have come around to the idea of decoupling the extension of the Bush tax cuts for the middle class from the rest of the fiscal cliff negotiations.

In a speech in Pennsylvania Friday morning, Obama called on Congress to pass an extension of the Bush-era tax cuts for people earning under $250,000, warning of a "Scrooge Christmas" if the cuts are allowed to expire.?

6 Trends You Can Choose From When Acquiring Modern Bedroom ...

Furniture trends have continued to change over the years as consumers look for new styles to suit their desires. The modern look has continued to evolve and new designs come up every day. Some of the new modern furniture looks like it would be at home in outer space, while others look like anything other than what they are.
Mazzali: "Emiselene" bed / il letto "Emiselene" . Bedroom area
It is not unusual to see a bed that looks like a space ship, or a hollowed out egg. Young consumers, who are more tech savvy than ever before, are looking for unique items and the more unusual the furniture, the better. Below are some trends that are becoming a common feature in modern homes.

1. Technology inspired furniture
Modern technology is playing a major role in furniture creation, both from a manufacturing and a design perspective. Bedroom furniture that looks like it belongs in the future is not uncommon. The furniture is fitted with smart gadgets that can turn the room into an entertainment or communication center. The new furniture is designed to be both functional, and versatile enough to accommodate all the gadgets that have become part of modern life.

2. Green furniture
Environmental awareness has had a big impact in every area of life, and that includes the creation of modern furniture. Those who are environmentally conscious are looking for modern furniture pieces that have a low carbon footprint and are made with recycled materials. People will spend a lot of money to ensure that they buy environmentally friendly furniture.

Awareness of the impact of environmental degradation and the effect on climate change has led to demand for green furniture. There are manufacturers who are catering to this niche market by producing furniture from recycled and renewable materials. This trend has also led to the shift towards buying locally produced furniture.

3. Multi-purpose furniture
Mazzali: "Xian" wardrobe / l'armadio "Xian" . Bedroom and living area
There is a huge demand for multi-functional modern furniture as people look for convenience and versatility. A bed that can serve as a sofa, or a wardrobe that doubles up as a bed, offer consumers the versatility they desire. It allows people to reduce the items they have in the home, while also ensuring that they have everything they need.

Instead of having an extra bed that you rarely use, you can use the furniture for another purpose, only converting it into a bed when you have guests. The desire for furniture that can have multiple uses has also risen out of the smaller living spaces. People are living in smaller apartments than ever before and they are looking for ways to fit all the furniture they need in the small homes. The bedroom furniture pieces come with extra storage space to reduce clutter.

4. Smaller furniture
Another result of the smaller spaces is the demand for smaller pieces of furniture. The standard bedroom in a regular apartment cannot hold too many large pieces and people are looking for ways to get all the furniture they need, while still leaving space to move about in the room.

Modern furniture is less ornate than traditional furniture, and the streamlined designs take up less space. Some of the modern furniture pieces can be folded away when not in use, creating more space in the room. Simple plain headboards are replacing the elaborate headboards that are a common feature in traditional designs.

5. Customized furniture
As people look to infuse their style and individuality into their homes, custom-made furniture is becoming a popular option. This trend allows people to get furniture that is unique and different from anything out there. They are able to combine unusual materials and to create shapes and designs that are unique and in many cases strange.

It is not unusual to find someone with a bedroom set that represents their favorite hobby or activity. Bedrooms with a sports or movie theme are popular choices. Several designers in the market specialize in creating customized furniture for customers looking for that individual unique look.

6. Asian inspired furniture
As the world becomes much smaller, people are adopting cultures from other parts of the globe. One of the most popular modern furniture designs is the Asian inspired design. The Asian furniture, and especially that of the Japanese, has always been very modern with block colors, straight, sleek lines and minimal adornment. This furniture has become very popular with modern design lovers around the world.

AP Source: Middle Tennessee joining Conference USA

A person familiar with the situation says Middle Tennessee has accepted an offer to join Conference USA and is leaving the Sun Belt.

The person spoke to The Associated Press Wednesday on condition of anonymity because neither the conference nor Middle Tennessee had publically announced the decision. The Virginian-Pilot first reported the move.

Middle Tennessee announced it will hold a news conference on campus Thursday but did not say what it was in regards to. The Blue Raiders (8-3) play Arkansas State on Saturday for the Sun Belt Conference championship.

The move is the latest domino to fall in conference realignment. Tulane and East Carolina announced Tuesday they are leaving Conference USA to join the Big East. The Green Wave will be full Big East members; the Pirates football only.

Google hacked in Romania and Pakistan? Not quite

17 hrs.

There were reports this past?week?that Google's Romanian and Pakistani portals,?Google.ro and Google.com.pk,?had been hacked. But?if you're worried about the security?of your Google account info, you can relax: By most standards, this was?nothing like a "real" hack. But it does show off another way?that hackers can?mess with the system.

It's true that people throughout the world found themselves looking not at the familiar search engine page?but at a message from a proud hacker, it wasn't?Google that?got hacked. What happened was?something called "DNS cache poisoning." While it sounds serious, it's not a security breach ? more like a bad rumor going around the Internet.

DNS, or the?domain name system, is how the Internet keeps track of itself. With billions of websites corresponding to billions of IP (Internet protocol)?addresses, many of which are constantly shifting, keeping track of which site goes with which address is an incredibly complicated job.

Furthermore, because authorities and methods differ between countries and regions, there are many DNS servers with conflicting information. Sometimes one mistake can be amplified and experienced around the world.

To help you visualize DNS, imagine you're on a long street lined with shops. You know what?shop you want, but you don't actually know which door to enter, and not only that, but?they keep rearranging the signs. To get to your destination, you have to ask the helpful people in the street, all of whom are more or less familiar with which door is which.

You tell?one of these guides: "I'm going to Google." Chances are he knows, and will reply, "It's the red door with the white sign." If he isn't sure, he asks his neighbor, who might be a little more up to date. And if that neighbor doesn't know, he'll ask his neighbor, and so on. Usually these guys are pretty knowledgeable, and every fresh query updates their?outdated information.

But because this system is based on trust,?false information can still?be spread, either intentionally or not. Someone might start a rumor that Google's door was blue with a green sign, hoping to drive traffic to this other door instead. The majority of guides knows not to trust such?random rumors, but everyone makes mistakes. So sometimes that information?will travel all the way up and down the line until?someone points out that the blue door does not in fact go to Google.

Starting a "rumor" like that in the domain name system is called poisoning or spoofing the DNS. It begins?when a normally reliable DNS server?reports incorrect?domain data. That information may simply be a mistake, as with a?Google outage earlier this month stemming from an error in Indonesia.

Or it may be?deliberate,?as the case appears to be this time: Someone got the servers managing the ".ro" Romanian domain to announce not just the wrong IP address for Google.ro, but a specific wrong IP of that person's choosing, pointing to their own webpage touting the "hack." Similarly, in Pakistan, the records for nearly 300 sites, including Google's and Apple's, were deliberately?rewritten.

The result: Millions of people who tried to use Google were steered to some hacker's site (which fortunately did not not host any malware or other objectionable content). But it's important to note that?Google itself was untouched. No matter how many people are directed to the wrong "door," the data and accounts that Google comprises are as safe as they've ever been.

In contrast, a "real" hack would be if someone actually gained access to Google's data ? its own code, or?user names, emails and passwords, that sort of thing. It's the difference between burglarizing a store and giving out bad directions to the store. That said, a DNS redirect around?Google means trouble for?the company, not to mention for?those who manage the Romanian and Pakistani DNS servers. Any security breach would have been on their side, so they've got more to worry about.

There's not much anyone at home can do to "protect" against this kind of Internet fraud, except make sure their computer's malware protection is up to date. DNS spoofing has to be resolved on a higher level, and the solution takes time to propagate. If you encounter a page that seems to be broken or defaced, don't linger or click around. Leave the site and give the system administrators time to sort it out before you go back. Chances are, the admins?are already on the case ? they would have been among the first to notice that their own site was broken, after all.

Spaceplane engine passes key test

The UK company developing an engine for a new type of spaceplane says it has successfully demonstrated the power unit's enabling technology.

Reaction Engines Ltd (REL) of Culham, Oxfordshire, ran a series of tests on key elements of its Sabre propulsion system under the independent eye of the European Space Agency (Esa).

Esa's experts have confirmed that all the demonstration objectives were met.

REL claims the major technical obstacle to its ideas has now been removed.

"This is a big moment; it really is quite a big step forward in propulsion," said Alan Bond, the driving force behind the Sabre engine concept.

The company must now raise the ?250m needed to complete the next phase of development.

This would essentially take the project to the final designs that could be handed to a manufacturer.

Although the British government has put significant sums into REL's technology in the past, the company's preference is to pursue city finance.

"The project to date has been more than 90% privately funded, and we intend to continue with that type of structure," explained Tim Hayter, the CEO of Reaction Engines Ltd.

"Yes, we would encourage government money but we're not reliant on it and we're certainly not depending on it.

"What is more important to us is government endorsement. That gives everyone the confidence that the UK is behind this project."

REL's idea is for an 84m-long vehicle called Skylon that would do the job of a big rocket but operate like an airliner, taking off and landing at a conventional runway.

The vehicle would burn a mixture of hydrogen and oxygen but in the low atmosphere the oxygen would be taken from the air, in the same way that a jet engine breathes air.

Only once it had achieved very high speeds would Skylon switch to full rocket mode, burning onboard fuel supplies.

Taking its oxygen from the air in the initial flight phase would mean Skylon could fly lighter from the outset with a higher thrust-to-weight ratio, enabling it to make a single leap to orbit, rather than using and dumping propellant stages on the ascent - as is the case with current expendable rockets.

If such a vehicle could be made to work, its reusability should transform the costs of accessing space.

But its success depends on the Sabre engine's ability to manage the very hot air entering its intakes at high speed.

These gases have to be cooled prior to being compressed and burnt with the onboard hydrogen.

REL's solution is a module containing arrays of extremely fine piping that can extract the heat and plunge the inrushing air to minus 140C in just 1/100th of a second.

Ordinarily, the moisture in the air would be expected to freeze out rapidly, covering the piping in a blanket of frost and dislocating their operation.

But the company's engineers have also devised a means to control the frosting, permitting the Sabre engine to run in jet mode for as long as is needed before making the transition to full rocket mode to take the Skylon spaceplane into orbit.

It is the innovative helium cooling loop with its pre-cooler heat-exchanger that REL has been validating on an experimental rig.

"We completed the programme by getting down to -150C, running for 10 minutes," said Mr Bond. "We've demonstrated that the pre-cooler is behaving absolutely as predicted."

The UK Space Agency asked Esa's propulsion division to audit the tests, and the Paris-based organisation has declared its satisfaction with the outcome of the experimental programme.

"One of the major obstacles to developing air-breathing engines for launch vehicles is the development of the lightweight high-performance heat exchangers," it said in a statement.

"With this now successfully demonstrated by REL, there are currently no technical reasons why the Sabre engine programme cannot move forward into the next stage of development."

Dr Mark Ford, who heads the propulsion engineering group at the agency, added: "The gateway is now open to move beyond the jet age."

The next phase is a three-and-a-half-year project. It would see a smaller version of Sabre being built on a test rig. The demonstrator would not have the exact same configuration as the eventual engine but it would allow REL to prove Sabre's performance across its air-breathing and rocket modes.

"Its parts will be spread out slightly; there's no need for us to package it as we would a real engine," said Mr Bond.

"Also, we will want the ease of access to exchange parts, so it will look a little bit like an anatomy exhibition."

The UK government is currently assessing what shape any involvement it should have in the next phase of Skylon/Sabre.

In addition, Esa is keen to do some study work with REL. Although it is currently working on new versions of its Ariane rocket - a classic expendable vehicle - the agency also wants keep an eye on future launcher technologies.

REL itself is considering other applications for its technology. These could include incorporating Sabre-like heat-exchangers into existing gas turbine jet engines to improve their fuel-burn efficiency; and also into desalination plants.

View Presentations On The iPhone And Edit On The iPad With New Prezi Apps

PreziiPad_ShowPrezi has a new iPhone app and has enhanced its iPad app for editing on the go. The company has also released some data from a recent survey of its users that shows how deep mobile is reaching into companies that just a few years ago would not equate the presentations they make with any kind of mobile device. The new iPhone app is read-only, designed primarily to consume presentations. It plugs into Apple TV or a projector for viewing. The iPad app has previously provided the capability to do minor updates. With the enhanced version, a user can create a new presentation, work offline and then update it. It’s the concept of the idea economy that has driven much of Prezi’s vision for what it wants to become. Mobile devices have a liberating aspect that correlates with the Prezi presentation technology. People work from home. They can go on the road, traveling light, without a laptop. If need be, they can show a presentation. Mobile is a catalyst for the new workplace. Apps like Prezi fit with this lifestyle. The service is cloud-based and has enough richness in its feature sets for people to use no matter where they are. It’s this new concept of the way we work that makes Prezi viable. But more so, Prezi is functional in a mobile context. The editor has a Zoom User Interface developed by Co-Founder Peter Halacsy, an architect and visual artist. It fits naturally with the editing capability of iPad and the easy portability of iPhone. The latency of cloud applications will always dog a service like Prezi. But that seems to be of little concern for the 1.3 million users who have downloaded the iPad app since its launch. Prezi’s architecture is the greater concern. It’s flash-based, making it vulnerable to services that use HTML5. As a native app, the service is viable as it is independent of flash in that context. But in a web environment, it is reliant on flash, making it a potential dinosaur in the fast competing world of productivity apps. Prezi competes with Apple Keynote and other presentation tools such as Powerpoint, Google Docs and Zoho. The company has $14 million in funding from Accel Partners and Sunstone Capital with additional investment from Magyar Telekom.

Murder trial in Russia inflames ethnic tensions

(AP) ? A world martial arts champion from Russia's southern Caucasus region was convicted Tuesday of involuntary manslaughter but set free after a trial that inflamed the country's ethnic tensions.

The verdict led to protests by nationalists outside the court and prompted Russian riot police to flood the wide square outside the Kremlin to prevent possible violent clashes between nationalists and ethnic minorities from the Caucasus.

Rasul Mirzayev had punched former police student Ivan Agafonov outside a Moscow nightclub in 2011 after the drunken 19-year-old offended Mirzayev's girlfriend. Agafonov fell down, hitting his head on a sewer grate and dying four days later.

Mirzayev's trial had raised the anger of nationalists, who accused him of deliberately killing the Russian student. The athlete's supporters argued that Agafonov had provoked the lethal punch and his killing was accidental.

The Zamoskvoretsky court ruled Tuesday that since Mirzayev had already served his sentence in pre-detention he could walk free.

There are significant tensions between ethnic Russians, who make up two-thirds of the country's 142 million people, and the more than 100 ethnicities that account for the remaining third. Hundreds of thousands of Caucasus natives have flooded central Russia in search of jobs, triggering widespread xenophobia and a spike in hate crimes.

Mirzayev, a bearded and lean 26-year-old, hails from Dagestan, Russia's most multiethnic province. Dagestan has for years been an epicenter of Islamic insurgency that stems from separatist wars in neighboring Chechnya.

The Caucasus has also been beset by high unemployment and rampant corruption. The Kremlin has poured billions of dollars to subsidize the restive region, but government critics say most of the money is being embezzled by local leaders.

Polls show that nearly half of Russians resent Kremlin's subsidies to the region and dislike migrants from both the Caucasus and the former Soviet Central Asian states.

A protest led by neo-Nazi leader Dmitri Demushkin erupted outside the court building Tuesday. Moscow police said six protesters, including Demushkin, were detained, while several dozen other protesters chanted "Shame!" A similar protest took place in the western Siberian city of Novosibirsk.

Dozens of riot police also gathered at Manezhnaya Square outside the Kremlin and blocked adjacent areas to prevent a nationalist rally. Last year, thousands of ultranationalists clashed with police and beat dark-skinned passers-by there to protest the shooting of a Russian soccer fan by a group of Caucasus men.

A top human rights advocate urged Russians not to escalate ethnic tensions following Mirzayev's release.

"There is no need to turn this everyday conflict into an inter-ethnic collision," Mikhail Fedotov was quoted by the Interfax news agency as saying.

But thousands of angry comments made the conviction one of the top Twitter hashtags in Russia.

"Such verdicts might trigger a social explosion," opposition leader and outspoken Kremlin critic Vladimir Milov tweeted.

Other comments suggested that Mirzayev's release was prompted by pressure from the Kremlin and Caucasus leaders.

"The regime is more afraid of a small riot in the Caucasus than a big one throughout Russia," opposition activist Nikolai Permyakov tweeted.

Even a democratic activist like Alexei Navalny has urged the Kremlin to "stop feeding the Caucasus" and helped organize this year's Russian March, a rally of ultranationalists that also drew neo-Nazis, monarchists and militant Orthodox Christians.

Rev. Run Weight Loss: Hip-Hop Legend Drops 22 Pounds In Effort To Lower Diabetes Risk

At 48, Joseph "Rev. Run" Simmons is finally hitting his stride with a healthy diet and exercise routine that he says is on par with achieving the kind of physique he'll need to keep up with his Run-D.M.C. group mate Darryl "D.M.C" McDaniels.

"I just did a concert with D.M.C. after 13 years, and after losing some pounds for that, I felt really good," Simmons told The Huffington Post. "We got good reviews for having lots of energy on stage and I realized that if I?m going to continue to do shows ... I gotta be in Mick Jagger-type of condition."

But aesthetic goals (and criticism from the public) aside, Simmons says his new healthy-living routine is rooted in something far more serious -- combating his higher-than-average risk for Type 2 diabetes.

"I found out that [my father] had diabetes in his older age and as I was moving along in my life ... I realized that I had to start losing weight," he said, explaining how he's taken up walking and recently dusted off his treadmill in an effort to stay the course during the chillier winter months. "[It was] for many reasons, but the number one reason was for health."

And while family history factors in to why Simmons needs to get his health in check, diabetes educator Jeanette Jordan said it's a myth many people need to dispel.

"One of the biggest [misconceptions] out there is people feel like diabetes runs in [their] family, so it?s inevitable that they?re going to get it," Jordan said, touting her employer Novo Nordisk's "Ask. Screen. Know." campaign, for which Simmons is now an ambassador. "The message that we?re trying to get out is that it doesn?t have to happen to you the same way. Yes, family history is a risk factor, but it doesn?t mean that because this happened to your mom it has to happen to you.

A diabetes diagnosis also doesn't mean life-altering changes, Jordan said. "What we need to do is not that difficult ... moderation is actually the key. We don?t take away everything that you love, it?s just how much we eat," Jordan said, stressing the importance of knowing which foods turn into sugar, forgoing sweetened soft drinks, and realizing that you can limit yourself to just one cheddar biscuit from Red Lobster and still enjoy your meal.

"The myth is that life is going to change so drastically, '[I'm] not going to be happy with my dining anymore', and that?s not true. You can live well with diabetes if you have it. But the first thing is, you have to be screened, you have to know if you have it. Ask yourself if you?re at risk and then do something about that," Jordan said.

Simmons agrees that knowing is the key -- even if you are the picture of perfect health. "My dad had diabetes, so it doesn?t mean just because Russell stands on his head and does yoga, and Angela?s in perfect health that they don?t have it," he said, referring to his yoga-promoting brother Russell Simmons and his daughter Angela Simmons, who showed off a svelte new figure earlier this year.

And just ahead of the holidays Simmons said he's relying on them for support. "They?re right there for me; they know what I?m doing to keep my weight under control ... and [during the holiday season] I believe in being proactive instead of reactive," Simmons said. "I have all types of things set up so I know, this is what I?m going to eat when this sweet tooth moment comes, this is what I?m going to eat when dinner comes around. And no, I?m not going to wait until the big dinner. [For Thanksgiving], I didn?t wait for the one big moment, I had already eaten twice, the right way, before dinner, so when dinner came, I wasn?t starved."

Bounce houses a party hit but kids' injuries soar

CHICAGO (AP) ? They may be a big hit at kids' birthday parties, but inflatable bounce houses can be dangerous, with the number of injuries soaring in recent years, a nationwide study found.

Kids often crowd into bounce houses, and jumping up and down can send other children flying into the air, too.

The numbers suggest 30 U.S. children a day are treated in emergency rooms for broken bones, sprains, cuts and concussions from bounce house accidents. Most involve children falling inside or out of the inflated playthings, and many children get hurt when they collide with other bouncing kids.

The number of children aged 17 and younger who got emergency-room treatment for bounce house injuries has climbed along with the popularity of bounce houses ? from fewer than 1,000 in 1995 to nearly 11,000 in 2010. That's a 15-fold increase, and a doubling just since 2008.

"I was surprised by the number, especially by the rapid increase in the number of injuries," said lead author Dr. Gary Smith, director of the Center for Injury Research and Policy at Nationwide Children's Hospital in Columbus, Ohio.

Amusement parks and fairs have bounce houses, and the playthings can also be rented or purchased for home use.

Smith and colleagues analyzed national surveillance data on ER treatment for nonfatal injuries linked with bounce houses, maintained by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. Their study was published online Monday in the journal Pediatrics.

Only about 3 percent of children were hospitalized, mostly for broken bones.

More than one-third of the injuries were in children aged 5 and younger. The safety commission recommends against letting children younger than 6 use full-size trampolines, and Smith said barring kids that young from even smaller, home-use bounce houses would make sense.

"There is no evidence that the size or location of an inflatable bouncer affects the injury risk," he said.

Other recommendations, often listed in manufacturers' instruction pamphlets, include not overloading bounce houses with too many kids and not allowing young children to bounce with much older, heavier kids or adults, said Laura Woodburn, a spokeswoman for the National Association of Amusement Ride Safety Officials.

The study didn't include deaths, but some accidents are fatal. Separate data from the product safety commission show four bounce house deaths from 2003 to 2007, all involving children striking their heads on a hard surface.

Several nonfatal accidents occurred last year when bounce houses collapsed or were lifted by high winds.

A group that issues voluntary industry standards says bounce houses should be supervised by trained operators and recommends that bouncers be prohibited from doing flips and purposefully colliding with others, the study authors noted.

Bounce house injuries are similar to those linked with trampolines, and the American Academy of Pediatrics has recommended against using trampolines at home. Policymakers should consider whether bounce houses warrant similar precautions, the authors said.

Know How to Get A Lump Sum of Cash in an Instant through JG ...

Paying structured settlements or annuities for a long period of time is rather burdensome. For most people, they would rather sell their future annuities or structured settlements to a structured settlement company so they could get lump sums of cash in an instant and pay for everything they have to pay for at once.

In Pennsylvania, one company has been providing such services to individuals around the United States for more than two decades now. JG Wentworth, as it is known, is a financial services company that buys structured settlements and annuities from people who choose not to burden themselves with future structured payments.? It was in 1997 that the company started to purchase structured settlement payments and mortgage notes from several industries. In due course, the company began to purchase even life insurance policies from people who need instant cash.

What invites more people to try the services of JG Wentworth is its capacity to provide its clients? lump sum payments which, in reality, are difficult to obtain in a jiffy. JG Wentworth reviews have so much to say about the satisfaction that the company brings to its clients. Among the clients that this financial services company has been serving include those people who have received settlements from unforeseen accidents, or those who have won lotteries but would have to take long months or years before they could get their prizes in full. As a financial services company that has evolved from a small merchant bank in Pennsylvania, JG Wentworth understands how certain unexpected instances would require one to have a considerable amount of money right away, such as an accident or death. This company exists to help such people by granting them access to instant money through purchasing their future payments, annuities or structured settlements.

Through the years, JG Wentworth has dramatically grown in the financial sector because of its expertise in managing structured settlements. Of the many JG Wentworth reviews that can be read around the web, one can only gauge how valuable the services of this company are especially for people who are confronted with a matter of life and death situations where access to the instant lump sum of cash is badly needed. Normally, it only takes a week for the company to fix all their transactions so clients do not need to wait too long just to get the amount of money that they call for. That can hardly be equalled by any structured settlement buyer in America.

Five Best Deal Sites

Five Best Deal Sites The holiday shopping season is revving up, which means it's time to search for some bargains so you don't go broke buying gifts for the people on your list. There are dozens of deal sites out there, but not all of them are useful when it's time to actually find discounts on things you actually want to buy. We asked you which sites you used, and this week we're taking a look at the top five, based on your nominations.

Earlier in the week we asked you which deal sites you used to save money. You offered up plenty of options, and we tallied up your votes, but sadly we only have room for the top five.

Five Best Deal Sites

Slickdeals

Slickdeals is so popular and well known that at my last job, most of my colleagues in our IT group (and out of it, honestly) had Slickdeals as our browser homepages. We never wanted to miss a deal, and new ones were breaking and expiring all day. Slickdeals is largely community powered, with members floating up coupon codes and sales available at retailers all over the web for the community to see and take advantage of, and it's not just on technology and electronics: apparel, local deals at nearby shops, travel and vacation packages, it's all there. Or you can hop right to your favorite online retailer and see what they have to offer before you click purchase. The forums are active and lively, and the deals never stop.

Five Best Deal Sites

Dealnews

The Dealnews network of sites, including DealMac and the old DealRAM and DealCam (which have now been absorbed into Dealnews) offer daily, regularly updating deals from around the web on computer equipment, home electronics, apparel, and much much more. Almost nothing escapes Dealnews's eye: monitors and displays, TVs and home entertainment gear, headphones and audio equipment, GPS systems, even sunglasses and clothing are all available. The backlog of deals is huge, and you just have to search for the product you're interested in to see what deals are active in that area and which ones have recently expired. They also get a ton of exclusive deals you'll only find at Dealnews, and an excellent collection of holiday and Black Friday bargains. I'm pretty sure half my gear I got thanks to Dealnews, and they're always worth a check for bargains before you start shopping.

Five Best Deal Sites

Woot!

Woot started off as the original daily deal site, and since being purchased by Amazon back in 2010, has expanded its empire to not just daily technology deals, but deals on wine, kids clothing and toys, technology and home electronics, independently designed t-shirts and apparel, and more. They've also launched Deals.Woot, a community powered site full of bargains on virtually any item you can think of, from lingerie to computer components, all upvoted or downvoted by the community so you only see the deals that actually save you money. The other Woot sites also go out of their way to offer more than just one deal a day, with many offering exclusive bargains and super-deep discounts for limited times, most notably their repeated and regular discounts on Gunnar glasses.

Five Best Deal Sites

Fatwallet

Fatwallet is another deal site that's been around for a long time, but they're worth a check before you go shopping online to make sure you're not missing a coupon code or a retailer that has the item you want on sale. Fatwallet covers major retailers and niche ones, in categories that are largely electronics and computer gear, but also include apparel, cosmetics, jewelry, and local deals in your community. Fatwallet's biggest resource is its community though: its active forums are full of regularly churning deals that appear, make it big all over the web, and then vanish when the coupon code has been used up or every other deal site on the web links to their forum threads. The site boasts millions of members, and the while the front page is great, the forums are where the magic happens.

Five Best Deal Sites

BradsDeals

While many deal sites focus on technology deals and electronics discounts, BradsDeals offers up discounts, price alerts, and coupon codes on other items we all buy: clothing, apparel, toiletries and small electronics (shavers, razors, etc), and jewelry. The site has a wealth of coupon codes for popular retailers and big box stores with names you'd recognize, and even offers printable coupons as well so you can run to a brick-and-mortar store when you don't want to wait for shipping. If you've felt that other deal sites are huge electronics stores with tiny household sections and other departments, BradsDeals will fix that for you?think of more like a traditional department store, just only stocked with discounts and coupons you can use anywhere you want to shop.

Now that you've seen the top five, it's time to put them all to a vote to decide the winner.

Honorable mentions this week go out to RetailMeNot, which does host plenty of deals and bargains in addition to the coupon codes for sites around the web that made it famous. If you don't already check RetailMeNot to see if there's a coupon for the site you're shopping on before you click purchase, you really should, even if you wind up being disappointed when there aren't any. A little love goes out to Passwird, another deal site run by one person, and while it doesn't have the broadest list of deals, the ones it does have are hand picked and frequently updated. That site hasn't changed in years, but it's still worth a bookmark.

Have something to say about one of the contenders? Want to make the case for your personal favorite, even if it wasn't included in the list? Remember, the top five are based on your most popular nominations from the call for contenders thread from earlier in the week. Make your case for your favorite?or alternative?in the discussions below.

The Hive Five is based on reader nominations. As with most Hive Five posts, if your favorite was left out, it's not because we hate it?it's because it didn't get the nominations required in the call for contenders post to make the top five. We understand it's a bit of a popularity contest, but if you have a favorite, we want to hear about it. Have a suggestion for the Hive Five? Send us an email at tips+hivefive@lifehacker.com!

iOS gaming Black Friday 2012 deals | The Verge

Console and PC gamers aren't the only ones in luck this holiday. Cult of Mac has compiled a list of iOS games currently on sale for Thanksgiving and Black Friday, mostly from EA but with a few Gameloft, Sega, and other titles thrown in. Better yet, pick up a $100 iTunes gift card from Best Buy for just $80 for an additional 20 percent savings on anything in the store. Here are some of the highlights:

Plenty of these have gone on sale before, but now is a good time to pick up super-cheap copies of big-name mobile games. We'll keep updating if we see any more noteworthy deals.

Spain's Santander considers sale of U.S. car finance unit

MADRID (Reuters) - Spain's Santander is considering a listing of its car financing division in the United States as it spins off overseas businesses to shore up its balance sheet against weakness in Spain caused by the country's economic slump.

A listing is envisaged in deal signed last year with other shareholders in the Fort Worth, Texas, unit, a spokeswoman for Santander told Reuters on Thursday.

"The IPO of Santander Consumer USA is included in the shareholders' agreement signed in October 2011 with our partners," the spokeswoman said.

Santander retains control of 65 percent of SCUSA through a holding company, while KKR & Co., Warburg Pincus, and Centerbridge Partners have a combined 25 percent stake. The remaining 10 percent belongs to Dundon DFS.

The spokeswoman said it was too early to talk of a timing for the initial public offering of SCUSA and that the valuation would depend on the share price at the time of the sale.

The Wall Street Journal reported on Wednesday Santander, which raised $4 billion in a U.S. listing of its Mexican banking business in September, was planning an offering of the car financing unit for the first half of 2013.

The business could be worth as much as $6 billion although plans are still in the early stages, according to the WSJ.

Santander has already listed its Brazilian and Chilean arms and its Argentine and British businesses are expected to follow.

The bank has weathered Spain's property market crash and sovereign debt crisis better than its rivals because it makes less than a fifth of its profit in the country after years of expansion abroad into regions such as Latin America.

Spain became the focal point of the euro zone debt crisis earlier this year as it became clear its banks would need financial support to rid their balance sheets of around 185 billion euros of toxic real estate assets.

School Lunches And Obesity Your Health Journal ... - Len Saunders

From The Chicago Tribune?..

With all the discussion swirling about healthier school lunches, I thought I?d share with you some details from an interesting article in last month?s edition of Pediatrics related to regulations on school snacks.

While the nutrition standards for school meals changed for the 2012-2013 school year, the new guidelines do not affect foods in vending machines, snack bars, or other venues within the school that are not a part of the regular school meal program. These foods (typically snacks and drinks) are termed ?competitive foods,? as they compete with school breakfasts and lunches.

The study reviewed in Pediatrics looked at weight changes for 6,300 students between 2004-2007 and followed the students from fifth to eighth grade. They found that adolescents in states with strict laws regulating the sale of ?competitive foods? gained less weight over this 3-year period than those living in states without laws.

As the childhood obesity epidemic continues (the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention now estimates that 1/5 of American children are obese), public health officials continue to look at ways to improve children?s eating habits during the school day. The laws surrounding snack foods at school differ by state. There are no laws in some states, weak laws (where recommendations were made but no specific guidelines formulate), and strong laws (where detailed nutritional standards were issued).

The study did not conclude that strong laws were directly responsible for the differences in students? weight gain, but it did conclude that better outcomes tended to happen in states with strong laws. That would seem to make sense to me, as most children including my own, if given the opportunity, would at times choose vending machine snacks over a healthy school lunch.

I also think this tendency is more common as children become teens and seem to ?snack? for lunch while multi-tasking, rather than sitting down to a well balanced meal. I continually hear adolescent patients of mine report this preference when I ask about their lunch habits. Many students allowed to eat ?off campus? also choose fast foods over a healthy school cafeteria lunch. Non-school day lunches are another issue.

Air New Zealand to unveil ?Hobbit?-themed plane

8 hrs.

Air New Zealand already has hobbits instructing passengers on how to fly safely. Now, you can soon see the creatures soaring over the Pacific and the Atlantic as well.

The airline has transformed a Boeing 777-300ER into a ?flying billboard? for ?The Hobbit:?An Unexpected Journey,? the first installment in Peter Jackson?s series?adapted from J.R.R. Tolkien?s book and a prequel to the blockbuster ?Lord of the Rings? saga.

A ?massive? decal inspired by the new movie covers the length of the plane, the largest graphic ever to be applied to an aircraft, said Jodi Williams, head of international marketing for Air New Zealand. It took about six days and 400 man hours to install the decal.

The airline has been secretive about the exact design, revealing only that it worked with Jackson?s Weta Workshop to create the motif, which features imagery from the film. The world will get its first glimpse of the aircraft on Saturday morning New Zealand time (Friday afternoon U.S. Eastern time), when it is unveiled in Auckland. The plane will then head to Los Angeles, where it is scheduled to land Saturday afternoon. The aircraft will fly primarily to L.A. and London.

Both markets are very important to Air New Zealand, which is hoping its partnership with the makers of ?The Hobbit? will help attract visitors from North America and Europe.

?It puts us out there and creates more awareness. And it gives people more of a reason to actually select New Zealand to travel,? Williams said.

?It?s very challenging for Air New Zealand to get that brand presence and that awareness because we don?t have a significant marketing budget, so by actually working in partnership with a movie that?s shot in New Zealand and shows New Zealand, it makes perfect sense.?

The airline?s first ?Hobbit?-themed effort ? a special flight safety video that features all kinds of creatures from Middle Earth ? is already a hit, with global media attention and more than 9 million views on YouTube since it was released on Halloween.?

The production is the first movie-aligned safety video for Air New Zealand, although the airline is known for its fun and quirky lessons on how to stay safe at 35,000 feet. Past videos have featured hunky rugby players, flight attendants wearing only body paint, and exercise enthusiast Richard Simmons.

Air New Zealand also likes to experiment with the look of its aircraft, introducing several planes painted black from nose to tail in recent months.

But it is Tolkien?s fantasy that?s putting the self-proclaimed ?airline of Middle Earth? in the spotlight right now.

Travel industry analyst Henry Harteveldt said Air New Zealand's "Hobbit" efforts are the most impressive movie marketing tie-ins he?s seen any airline do.

?Short-term, this will probably benefit the movie more than the airline, at least as far as North American passengers are concerned,? said Harteveldt, co-founder of the Atmosphere Research Group.

?Long-term, this marketing tie-in should help Air New Zealand successfully increase interest in visiting the country among travelers.?

The airline?s biggest challenge is the physical distance between the U.S. and New Zealand, he added. Travelers often balk at such a long and expensive flight, but ?Hobbit? fans inspired to book movie-related tours may be undaunted by those factors, Harteveldt said. New Zealand?s tourism industry is eager to repeat the boost in visitors it saw after the ?Lord of the Rings? trilogy.

Wellington, New Zealand, will host the global premiere of ?The Hobbit:?An Unexpected Journey? on Nov. 28. The movie debuts in the U.S. on Dec. 14.

Emperor Penguins Need Sea Ice for Foraging

Motion detectors mounted on emperor penguins have revealed that sea ice plays a critical role in the birds' long food odyssey.

Emperor penguins rely on sea ice for breeding and feeding. Shifting patterns of sea ice due to changing climate in the Antarctic could alter the penguin's behavior and ecology, said study author Shinichi Watanabe, an animal ecologist and professor at Fukuyama University in Hiroshima, Japan.

The Antarctic sea ice hit a record maximum this year, but the sea ice distribution around the continent is changing, while the penguins nest in the same place every year.

"If penguins don't stay on the ice during foraging trips, they may not be able to sustain such long trips," Watanabe told OurAmazingPlanet.

March to the sea

The image of thousands of penguins shuffling across the frigid Antarctic ice was immortalized in the film "March of the Penguins." Female emperor penguins trek 30 to 75 miles (50 to 120 kilometers) each way during chick-rearing season to bring back food for their young.

Emperor penguins spend more time foraging than any other penguin species, Watanabe said. "Emperor penguins are a unique ecology, because they are the largest species of penguins and they have the biggest and largest chicks, so they have to bring [a lot of] food," he said. "Also, the distance between the breeding colony and the foraging site is very long, so they need more food."

The ice helps the penguins gorge on food by providing short, safe rest breaks between long dives, Watanabe and his colleagues found. The results, based on 10 penguins from a colony at Cape Washington in the Ross Sea, were published online today (Nov. 21) in the journal PLoS Biology.

The relationship between sea ice conditions and emperor penguins' foraging has been unclear because of the difficulties of tracking the birds at sea, Watanabe said. To figure out how penguins behave once they reach the open ocean, the researchers used special probes that captured motion on land and underwater.

Safety in numbers

The first thing the animals do after their long walk is rest, the researchers found. After leaving the colony and arriving at the ice edge before the start of a foraging trip, the birds spent 3 hours to 38 hours waiting before making the first dive.

The researchers suspect that the long rests are a result of penguins waiting for others to form a group. Antarctic penguins prefer to dive in flocks, slipping into the water all at once from the ice edge. This could help lower the risk of a seal attack, as leopard seals eagerly await these group dives and there is safety in numbers. However, it's more likely that the phenomenon is simply a result of group behavior, the authors report in the study.

With 24 hours of sunlight, penguins dived continuously through day and night, spending up to two weeks foraging. They relied on the ice for rests between deep dives that lasted up to five hours (with quick breath breaks).
