Japan's Toyota named Best Global Green Brand

Toyota is already the largest global carmaker in terms of vehicle sales, but a new report has now named the Japanese company the Best Global Green Brand.

Retaining the top spot in the Interbrand report, Toyota was praised for its environmental sustainability and green image - particularly in light of its commitment to hybrid and electric vehicles.

The company was also celebrated for achieving a landfill status of virtually zero across its North American facilities.

A second Japanese carmaker in the shape of Honda was also named at the top of the consultancy's second annual Best Global Green Brand Report.

Commenting on the report, David Pearson, global sustainability leader at Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu, said: "It is becoming increasingly clear that sustainability is a 'must have' rather than a 'nice to have' for a lot of companies."

He added that commitment to the environment can help a company grow, cut its costs and improve its margins, and boost its brand image.

Remains of 2nd person found in Colo. fire wreckage

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) ? Firefighters searching for bodies in the roughly 350 homes burned by the most destructive wildfire in Colorado history found a second body Friday at a residence where earlier another person was discovered dead.

As crews on the front lines made slow but steady progress against the flames, Police Chief Pete Carey said fewer than 10 people altogether were unaccounted for. The remains of one person were found Thursday in what was left of one home. He confirmed that the remains of a second person who lived there were found Friday.

The 26-square-mile blaze ? one of several wildfires burning across the tinder-dry West ? was reported to be 25 percent contained, and authorities began lifting some of the evacuation orders for the more than 30,000 people who fled their homes a few days ago.

After growing explosively earlier in the week, the fire gained no ground overnight, authorities reported Friday. And the weather was clear and mostly calm, a welcome break from the lightning and high wind that drove the flames.

"The focus for today is to hold what we got," extend the fire lines to contain more of the blaze, and bring in more heavy equipment, said Rich Harvey, incident commander for the fire.

Exhausted firefighters fresh off the front lines described the devastation in some neighborhoods and the challenges of battling such a huge blaze.

"It looks like hell. I would imagine it felt like a nuclear bomb went off. There was fire everywhere. Everything had a square shape to it because it was foundations," said Rich Rexach, who had been working 12-hour days since Tuesday, when flames swept through neighborhoods in the northwest part of the city of more than 400,000 people 60 miles south of Denver.

"Everything you put water on, it was just swallowing it," he said.

President Barack Obama toured the stricken areas Friday after issuing a disaster declaration for Colorado that frees up federal funds. He thanked firefighters and other emergency workers, saying: "The country is grateful for your work. The country's got your back."

As residents waited anxiously to see what was left of their homes, police reported several burglaries in evacuated areas, along with break-ins of cars packed with evacuees' possessions outside hotels.

Carey said Friday a person wearing protective fire gear in an evacuated area was arrested on charges of impersonating a firefighter and influencing a public official.

"We were able to stop him and identify that person as somebody that probably wasn't someone who belonged on that scene," Carey said. He didn't have the person's name.

This month, authorities accused a man of impersonating a firefighter at two other Colorado wildfires.

Community leaders began notifying residents Thursday that their homes were destroyed. Lists of the heavily damaged streets were posted at a high school, and residents scanned the sheets, but for many, the notification was a formality. They had already recognized their streets on the aerial pictures that appeared in the news.

"The blanket that was on my bed when I grew up, a bunch of things my mother had made," said Rick Spraycar, listing what he lost when his house in the hard-hit Mountain Shadows subdivision burned down. "It's hard to put it into words. Everything I owned. Memories."

For Ernie Storti the pain of knowing that his was one of a handful of homes spared in his neighborhood was hard.

"Our home was standing, and everything south of us was gone," he said as tears streamed down his face outside a Red Cross Shelter where he had met with insurance agents.

Authorities were still trying to figure out what caused the fire. They said conditions were too dangerous to allow them in to start their investigation.

More than 1,000 personnel and six helicopters were fighting the fire.

All eight Air Force firefighting planes from four states will be at Colorado Springs' Peterson Air Force Base Saturday and available to fight the fire, marking the first time the entire fleet has been activated since 2008, Col. Jerry Champlin said.

Among the fires elsewhere in the West:

? At least 60 homes near Pocatello, Idaho, burned in a fast-moving wildfire that started Thursday evening. The blaze covered more than 1? square miles. Officials said it was human-caused but gave no details.

? A 70-square-mile wildfire in Utah destroyed at least 160 structures, more than 50 of them primary homes. Another blaze in Utah doubled in size to 70 square miles and was threatening about 75 structures. And a wildfire that erupted Friday in a foothills community near Salt Lake City destroyed at least three homes and was threatening 200 others.

Blazes also burned in Wyoming and Montana.

Authorities battling six wildfires in Utah said Colorado was taking most of the available fire crews, leaving them short-handed.

Fire commander Cheto Olais said leaders at one Utah blaze had requested about 200 additional firefighters but will probably get no more than 20. "A lot of assets are going to Colorado," Olais said.

Romney response to Supreme Court on health care

Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney's response to Thursday's Supreme Court decision to uphold President Barack Obama health care law, as transcribed by Roll Call:

___

As you might imagine, I disagree with the Supreme Court's decision and I agree with the dissent.

What the court did not do on its last day in session, I will do on my first day if elected president of the United States. And that is I will act to repeal Obamacare.

Let's make clear that we understand what the court did and did not do.

What the court did today was say that Obamacare does not violate the Constitution. What they did not do was say that Obamacare is good law or that it's good policy.

Obamacare was bad policy yesterday. It's bad policy today. Obamacare was bad law yesterday. It's bad law today.

Let me tell you why I say that.

Obamacare raises taxes on the American people by approximately $500 billion. Obamacare cuts Medicare - cuts Medicare by approximately $500 billion. And even with those cuts and tax increases, Obamacare adds trillions to our deficits and to our national debt, and pushes those obligations on to coming generations.

Obamacare also means that for up to 20 million Americans, they will lose the insurance they currently have, the insurance that they like and they want to keep.

Obamacare is a job-killer. Businesses across the country have been asked what the impact is of Obamacare. Three-quarters of those surveyed by the Chamber of Commerce said Obamacare makes it less likely for them to hire people.

And perhaps most troubling of all, Obamacare puts the federal government between you and your doctor.

For all those reasons, it's important for us to repeal and replace Obamacare.

What are some of the things that we'll keep in place and must be in place in a reform, a real reform of our health care system?

One, we have to make sure that people who want to keep their current insurance will be able to do so. Having 20 million people - up to that number of people lose the insurance they want is simply unacceptable.

Number two, got to make sure that those people who have pre-existing conditions know that they will be able to be insured and they will not lose their insurance.

We also have to assure that we do our very best to help each state in their effort to assure that every American has access to affordable health care.

And something that Obamacare does not do that must be done in real reform is helping lower the cost of health care and health insurance. It's becoming prohibitively expensive.

And so this is now a time for the American people to make a choice. You can choose whether you want to have a larger and larger government, more and more intrusive in your life, separating you and your doctor, whether you're comfortable with more deficits, higher debt that we pass on to the coming generations, whether you're willing to have the government put in place a plan that potentially causes you to lose the insurance that you like, or whether instead you want to return to a time when the American people will have their own choice in health care, where consumers will be able to make their choices as to what kind of health insurance they want.

This is a time of choice for the American people. Our mission is clear: If we want to get rid of Obamacare, we're going to have to replace President Obama. My mission is to make sure we do exactly that: that we return to the American people the privilege they've always had to live their lives in the way they feel most appropriate, where we don't pass on to coming generations massive deficits and debt, where we don't have a setting where jobs are lost.

If we want good jobs and a bright economic future for ourselves and for our kids, we must replace Obamacare.

That is my mission, that is our work, and I'm asking the people of America to join me. If you don't want the course that President Obama has put us on, if you want, instead, a course that the founders envisioned, then join me in this effort. Help us. Help us defeat Obamacare. Help us defeat the liberal agenda that makes government too big, too intrusive, and that's killing jobs across this great country.

Thank you so much.

Pelosi predicts 6-3 vote in favor of health law

As the U.S. Supreme Court prepared to announce a decision on President Barack Obama's signature health care law, one of the legislation's chief supporters predicted that it would be upheld by a 6-3 vote.

  1. Don't miss these Health stories

    1. Thrilled and relieved, sick patients cheer court ruling

Jerry Fielder and Beth Ann Levendoski breathed sighs of relief Thursday on the news that the U.S. Supreme Court had largely upheld President Obama's signature health care law, preserving the guarantees that the seriously ill women will have health insurance.

    2. Tasty lionfish? Beware nasty toxins
    3. Dangerous ride? ATV deaths prompt warnings
    4. Mom challenges sunscreen ban after kids burned
    5. Dole bagged salad recalled for listeria risk

Nancy Pelosi, the House of Representatives' Democratic leader, said she can see Chief Justice John Roberts siding with Obama in an anticipated divided Supreme Court ruling on Thursday.

"I believe 6-3," Pelosi told the Reuters Washington Summit on Wednesday.

She reasoned that a decision upholding the law would require the support of Justice Anthony Kennedy, a moderate conservative who often controls the outcome of the court's rulings since the justices frequently are split in their decisions.

"If you get Kennedy, I don't think that Roberts would want it to look political" and oppose it, Pelosi said, alluding to the fact that Roberts has said he favors unanimity on his court.

As a Democratic senator from Illinois in 2005, Obama opposed Republican President George W. Bush's nomination of Roberts to the Supreme Court.

In 2010, the same year the president got his healthcare law through Congress, Obama ripped into the Roberts court for a ruling that allowed corporations to spend unlimited money in elections.

This week the court again drew the wrath of the White House -- as well as Pelosi and other Democrats in Congress -- by reaffirming its 2010 decision by rejecting Montana's century-old ban on businesses engaging in political spending.

Pelosi voiced confidence that the health care law she helped draft will meet any constitutional test. "It is ironclad. We didn't do this off the back of our hand," she said.

"We believe in judicial review in everything that we do. I wrote a bill that would withstand any question of its conditionality."

The court's four Democratic-appointed liberals, Justices Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Stephen Breyer, Sonia Sotomayor and Elena Kagan, are widely expected to vote to uphold the healthcare law.

Conservative Justices Antonin Scalia, Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito are considered likely votes against the law, based on their comments in oral arguments in March or their past rulings.

Roberts expressed skepticism about the law during oral arguments in the health care cases. But oral arguments have traditionally been a notoriously poor guide to the end result in Supreme Court cases.

Press Release/ Deluge of In-vehicle Information to Trigger a - PRZoom

The exponential growth of in-vehicle information is triggering a revolution in the design of display systems in the automotive infotainment market. The ubiquitous presence of Smartphones has led to a demand for the same functionalities to be present inside cars. Technologies such as touch screens and large displays have become a commodity in the automotive infotainment domain. As vehicles rely more and more on sophisticated forms of technology, the requirements for onboard information displays are becoming increasingly comprehensive and diverse.

New analysis from Frost & Sullivan (automotive.frost.com), Strategic Analysis of European and North American Markets for Display and Instrument Clusters, finds that in Europe, the market size for central displays, touch screens and head up displays is estimated to reach 9.5 million, 2 million and 0.5 million, respectively, by 2017. In North America, the market size for central displays, touch screens and head up displays is anticipated to reach 6 million, 3 million and 0.4 million, respectively, by 2017.

"The availability of Internet connectivity has led to the proliferation of various web services, Smartphone applications and entertainment-related functions inside vehicles," notes Frost & Sullivan Research Analyst Krishna Jayaraman. "This has led to the need for large and intelligent information display systems, which could house all the information content."

The ever growing consumer demand for in-vehicle information related to comfort, convenience and safety has led to an information overload. It has spurred the development of new technologies and bigger displays to portray this information.

"Information management is a big challenge and is closely related to driver distraction," remarks Jayaraman. "Automotive original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) are in a situation where they have to achieve a balance between offering new technologies to stay ahead of the competition and keeping the human machine interface (HMI) as easy as possible; prioritisation and splitting information to different in-vehicle displays is the need of the hour."

Driver distraction, fuelled by information overload, highlights the need for HMI solutions which not only store additional information, but also limit the amount of information projected to the driver by prioritising it.

There is an increased need for large central displays to house more information. However, multi-modality of input interfaces alone will not help; information will have to be split to different display options, according to priority.

"For instance, functions which are vehicle-specific and necessary while driving should be projected on the head up displays and instrument cluster, while other entertainment features can reside on central displays," suggests Jayaraman. "Additionally, restricting the freedom to access web-based content to limit distraction will be pivotal."

Top 10 Reasons to Use Technology in Education: iPad, Tablet ...

While there are some nay-sayers who bring up some negative effects of technology on education in the classrooms, mainly budgetary reasons, using new technologies is the future of the education system.
The following reasons should silence the nay-sayer and help them heed the wisdom from Sheryl Nussbaum-Beach,
?Teachers will not be replaced by technology, but teachers who don?t use technology will be replaced by those who do.?.

Teachers are finding that using different classroom technologies like tablet computers, digital video, iPods, and video games are great tools for helping students learn.

Kindle ereader nook
1. Students love it. Students love using new technologies in the classroom. Whether it be the ?cool? factor or just a genuine interest in new technology, it allows teachers to vary activities of the day and engage students. There is no commandment for education that says,
?THOU SHALT NOT HAVE FUN?
Students spend hours using technology like computers and television when they get home from school?why not engage them through their favorite mediums?
2. It engages the Four Key Components to Learning. Click on the link to read how technology in education (specifically the iPod School Listening Center) engages the 4 key components to learning.
3. Professional Development. Using new technologies allow students to learn another skill set that will help them in the marketplace. How many jobs need basic computing skills let alone advanced computing skills? Any time a teacher can encourage students to learn through technology, they kill two birds with one stone.
The tech industry is only getting bigger?encourage your students to know and understand technology so they can be the tech leaders of the future!
With the power of the internet, knowing how to use a simple piece of technology can turn an aspiring singer into Justin Bieber (whose mom uploaded videos of him singing which led to his fame) and a hilarious prankster into YouTube Star EdBassmaster, who recently used an AmpliVox Sound Cruiser PA System in a video (that is approaching 1,000,000 views!). EdBassMaster ?Look at This? Video with Sound Cruiser
4. Makes Life Easier for Teachers. Teachers have to juggle a variety of tasks outside of teaching including planning lessons, grading, meeting with parents, and some administrative work. Why not help yourself out and put objective tests online so that students can instantly see their grades instead of spending valuable time grading?

5. It Improves Test Scores. A benefit of engaging students through technology and media is allowing them to work at their own pace and not be held back by students who learn at a slower rate. This can allow gifted students to progress several grades ahead of their peers over the course of a year. Another proof of improved test scores comes from reaching different learning styles through the use of technology. The use of electronic drilling in education can help students learn quickly and provide incentives like games for them to keep progressing. Nobody does this better than Khan Academy.
6. Helps Students with Low Attention Spans. Students with ADD or ADHD can be aided through the use of technology by mixing up the learning process with different methods and through providing them engaging activities to keep their interest. Technology is a favorite among teachers who teach in ESL classrooms or special education settings.
Even the best teachers can have their moments or topics when they are like Ben Stein in Ferris Bueller?s Day Off or Charlie Brown?s Teacher in the eyes of their students. Using technology keeps students awake and their attention level high. How hard is it for you to fall asleep while on the internet compared to hearing a lecture?
7. Learn from the Experts. With the an increasing amount of free resources available on the internet, you can engage your students with content from the smartest and best teachers in the world

Photos of Google's Vic Gundotra wearing the latest, bluehued Glass prototype

Sergey Brin briefly pulled out a light blue prototype of Google Glass whilst on stage at Google I/O, and as it turns out, those are evidently the latest and greatest models that the company is willing to wear around. We ran into social exec Vic Gundotra after this morning's keynote, only to find him donning precisely the same set that was teased on stage. We asked if the blue was just part of Google's experimentation with coloring Glass, and he chuckled while confessing that he wasn't authorized to speak further about the project or its ambitions. Still, the man looks good in blue. And something tells us you would, too.

Oil above $80 as storm lashes Gulf of Mexico

(AP) ? Oil rose above $80 a barrel Monday in Asia after a storm shut down about a quarter of oil output in the Gulf of Mexico.

Benchmark oil for August delivery was up 48 cents at $80.24 a barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract rose $1.56 to settle at $79.76 in New York on Friday.

In London, Brent crude for August delivery was up 36 cents at $91.34 per barrel on the ICE Futures exchange.

Tropical Storm Debby, with top sustained winds of about 60 mph (95 kph), is lashing Florida and Alabama with heavy rains and is expected to come ashore later this week over the Florida Panhandle. As of Sunday morning, 23 percent of oil and gas production in the Gulf region had been suspended, according to a government hurricane response team. Employees have been evacuated from 13 drilling rigs and 61 production platforms in the Gulf.

Analysts said any supply disruption should be brief since the storm was not expected to significantly damage oil facilities.

Investors will also be closely watching a European Union summit this week where the leaders the leaders of France, Germany, Italy and Spain have agreed to push for a growth package worth up to $163 billion to spur the region's weak economy.

Crude has plunged from $106 less than two months ago amid signs of slowing economic growth and oil demand in the U.S., Europe and China. Capital Economics said it expects Brent crude to fall to as low as $70 during the next 18 months.

In other energy trading, heating oil was up 1.1 cents at $2.54 per gallon while gasoline futures gained 1.9 cents at $2.45 per gallon.

Natural gas jumped 5.1 cents at $2.68 per 1,000 cubic feet

Willingham's HR off Chapman tops Reds

Associated Press Sports

updated 4:21 p.m. ET June 24, 2012

CINCINNATI (AP) - Josh Willingham paid close attention to Joe Mauer's at-bat, then came up with a clutch hit of his own.

Willingham belted a long two-run homer off shaky Cincinnati closer Aroldis Chapman in the ninth inning, rallying the Minnesota Twins to a 4-3 victory over the Reds on Sunday.

Mauer lined a one-out double off the wall in left before Willingham connected for his 15th homer, a 438-foot drive into the second level in left.

"It was fun to watch Joe's at-bat. It set the tone for the inning," Willingham said. "I was looking for something over the middle hard and the pitch was over the middle and it was hard. I tried to stay short with my swing. You don't swing early but just try to make it shorter."

Chapman (4-4) yielded a game-ending, two-run homer to Asdrubal Cabrera in his previous outing, a 3-2 loss at Cleveland on Tuesday. The lanky left-hander is 0-4 with three blown saves and an unseemly 11.37 ERA in his last seven games.

Willingham's homer came after Joey Votto hit a two-run shot to put the Reds in front in the eighth.

"If you need a fastball hitter in those situations, Josh is the guy," Twins manager Ron Gardenhire said. "Mauer's a great hitter. He can do things that others can't against a pitcher who throws above the speed limit."

Chapman struck out Darin Mastroianni to start the inning, then threw two quick strikes to Mauer. But Mauer worked the count full before coming up with the big hit.

"I tried to stay short. It's tough in interleague because you haven't seen the pitchers before and you don't know how the ball moves," Mauer said. "The guy's got a heck of an arm and has good movement on his pitches. I was trying to put the barrel on the ball. A guy that throws that hard supplies most of the power."

Scott Diamond (6-3) allowed three runs and eight hits in eight innings for Minnesota. The left-hander struck out seven and also hit two batters.

The home run by fellow Canadian Votto was disheartening to the rookie.

"I felt I made a good pitch," Diamond said. "From that pitch to Willingham going off it was pretty suspenseful but we remained positive."

Former Reds reliever Jared Burton, subbing for ailing closer Matt Capps, worked the ninth for his first career save. Capps had a setback with his sore shoulder.

Burton spent the last five seasons in Cincinnati. He opted for free agency when the Reds wanted to send him to the minor leagues last September; then signed with Minnesota two months later.

"The last out was pretty intense," he said. "I had a little extra adrenaline going but I tried to tell myself the pressure was on the hitter because they were the ones losing."

Burton walked Todd Frazier to start the ninth. Frazier moved up on Willie Harris' sacrifice and Burton walked pinch-hitter Scott Rolen before Chris Heisey flied out on the first pitch and Wilson Valdez bounced into a fielder's choice.

"I had to be careful with Rolen," Burton said. "He's a professional hitter. I felt like I made good pitches the rest of the inning."

Mike Leake pitched eight solid innings for Cincinnati, surrendering just five hits. He struck out five, walked none and had just 86 pitches when manager Dusty Baker went to Chapman for the ninth.

"That's Chapman's job," Baker said. "Leake just came off throwing 112 pitches his last time out. Everybody's got a job. What if I send Leake out and he gives it up? The hitters coming up would have seen him for the fourth time."

The Reds dropped to 7-8 in interleague play this season and 104-131 all-time. The Twins finished 9-9 this year and are 157-125 all-time.

The NL Central leaders grabbed the lead in the fourth. Devin Mesoraco hit a leadoff double, moved up on Leake's sacrifice and scored on Wilson Valdez's two-out single.

Trevor Plouffe responded with his 15th homer, a 385-foot drive to right-center that tied it with one out in the fifth.

There has been at least one homer at Great American Ball Park for 62 consecutive games, the longest current streak in the majors.

Justin Morneau's run-scoring groundout put the Twins in front in the seventh, but Votto's 14th homer made it 3-2 in the eighth.

NOTES: Capps will be examined on Monday after the Twins return from their road trip. The team was discussing possible roster moves, Gardenhire said. ... Minnesota definitely will add a pitcher as a 26th player for a scheduled doubleheader Saturday against Kansas City, Gardenhire said. ... Minnesota CF Denard Span, hitless in his last 10 at-bats, was out of the starting lineup. Ben Revere moved from right field to center. ... Reds SS Zack Cozart, who had one hit in 14 at-bats over his last three games, rested. Valdez started in his place.

How will Google continue to support Maps on iOS?

Whether we like it or not, Apple has decided it is done with Google Maps and will be releasing its own mapping and navigation services. Undoubtedly, this has left a good amount of iOS users upset. Many of them would love to keep the option to use Google Maps if that is their choice, and it seems like Google may be cooking something up.

In a Google+ post talking about Street View, Googler Jeff Huber encountered a comment from a disappointed Google Maps fan. He then responded with a very vague but hopeful comment:

We have no idea what this could mean, and this is by no means any announcement or leaked information. We could see Google attempting different strategies to stay relevant for iOS users, though. They could support Google Maps via HTML5 or a good web app. Another method would be to support their native app via the Apple App Store. Users could then simply download it.

This would still not be as convenient as having it installed directly on the device?s stock software. But would it be a good move from Google? Definitely ? Us Android fans always say that options are good.

As already mentioned, we do not know what will become of this pandemonium, but Google is already planning ahead. They have just lowered their prices for using the Google Maps API, and significantly. There is also a flurry of new features coming, including their unbelievably realistic 3D maps.

As for us Android users, we will continue enjoying Google Maps as we always have. How do you guys think Google should handle this, though?

PFT: Archuleta says football made him 'miserable'

Tiger-Cats' Cobourne runs with the ball against Alouettes' Williams during their CFL football game in HamiltonReuters

As the Canadian Football League approaches its annual Canada Day launch to its regular season, let?s fill some space on a slow (relatively speaking) Saturday and look back in time at a series of preseason games once played between teams from the NFL and CFL.

While recently perusing the Official 2011 NFL Record & Fact Book (the 2012 version should be coming out soon, and like a total dork I actually look forward to getting it), I noticed at page 531 a full list of the league?s International Games.

From August 1950 through August 1961, teams from the NFL and CFL played six times during the NFL preseason, in Canada.? (For the Canadian teams, the games were exhibitions played during the CFL regular season.)

It started in 1950, when the Giants beat the Rough Riders in Ottawa, 27-6.? The following year, the Giants thumped the same team in the same town, 41-18.

The series resumed eight years later, when the Chicago Cardinals clobbered the Argonauts, 55-26, in Toronto.? In 1960, the Steelers slammed the Argonauts in Toronto, 43-16.

The exercise ended the following year, with a pair of contests played three days apart.? On August 2 in Toronto, the Cardinals (which had since moved to St. Louis) cold-cocked the Argonauts, 36-7.? On August 5, the Bears bested the Alouettes in Montreal, 34-16.

But the Canadians saved a little face three days after that.? In the one and only AFL-CFL game, the Tiger-Cats took apart the Buffalo Bills in Hamilton, 38-21.

In the past 51 years, no NFL team (or AFL, during the league?s remaining years of existence) has ever again played a CFL team, in Canada or elsewhere.? It?s unlikely that it will ever happen again.? Still, every time you hear the name ?Tiger-Cats? remember that they own the bragging rights over the Bills and, in turn, the league that absorbed the Buffalo franchise in 1970.

Cherie Blair and Cilla Black lead goats across London Bridge

London SE1 website team London SE1 community website

London SE1 community website

Cherie Blair, Cilla Black, Nancy Del'Olio and Baroness Benjamin were among 20 high-profile women who led a procession of goats across London Bridge on Saturday afternoon to mark International Widows Day.

The event was organised by the Loomba Foundation, whose founder, Lord Loomba, is a freeman of the City of London and therefore entitled to drive livestock across London Bridge without toll.

The goat is a symbol of wealth and prosperity and often a lifeline for widows in South Asia and across Africa.

International Widows Day was initiated by the Loomba Foundation in 2005, and officially recognised by the United Nations General Assembly in 2010.

Lord Loomba set up the foundation in 1997 in memory of his mother, Shrimata Pushpa Wati Loomba, who became a widow at the age of 37 in Punjab, India, and devoted her life to ensuring that her seven children received a proper education. The foundation aims to educate the children of poor widows throughout India and empower widows around the world.

This year the foundation is launching a new project to empower 10,000 impoverished widows in India by providing them each with a new sewing machine and a two week training course in garment production.

Participants in Saturday's event included Cherie Blair, who is president of the Loomba Foundation, as well as Cilla Black, Heather Small, Nancy Dell'Olio, Rajashree Birla, Baroness (Floella) Benjamin and Lib Dem MP Jo Swinson.

The celebrity walk was followed by a reception at 10 Downing Street, hosted by deputy prime minister Nick Clegg, and a fundraising dinner at the Banqueting House in Whitehall.

The City of London Corporation discourages freemen of the City from exercising their right to cross the bridge with livestock. Two sheep drives were held in 2008 ? one in support of the restoration of Canterbury Cathedral and the other to raise funds for the Lord Mayor's Appeal.

Spain gets another crack at France

By PAUL LOGOTHETIS

AP Sports Writer

Associated Press Sports

updated 5:22 p.m. ET June 22, 2012

DONETSK, Ukraine (AP) - Spain is looking for a little history and a little revenge Saturday in its European Championship quarterfinal against France.

Spain has never beaten the French in six major competitions, the most recent loss coming at the 2006 World Cup. Spain hasn't been eliminated from a major tournament since, and defender Sergio Ramos doesn't want another French victory to end his team's bid for a third straight major title.

"Football offers up something nice, which is you always get a chance at revenge, and (Saturday night) we get that chance," said Ramos, who played in that 3-1 second-round loss to Les Bleus in Hannover, Germany. "In 2006, we didn't possess the maturity or the experience that we have now. We were in the midst of being formed into a team, with a lot of new players."

Since that result, Spain has gone on to hone the quick-touch, possession game that led to triumphs at Euro 2008 and the 2010 World Cup. Between those title wins, the French claimed the fifth of its six wins over Spain.

"There are facts that can't be denied, and we will strive to change that," Spain coach Vicente del Bosque said Friday from the Donbass Arena. "We're favorites since we're world and European champions, but in the prior matchups France has been superior to us. Let's see if we are capable of changing that precedent by extending the success we've achieved."

Del Bosque said he had doubts over his lineup after the unconvincing 1-0 victory over Croatia, which helped Spain finish first in its group.

Spain's attack has been led by striker Fernando Torres or midfielder Cesc Fabregas, and there was no further clarity over which way Del Bosque would lean in the team's first match in Ukraine. Striker Fernando Llorente, who impressed this season with Athletic Bilbao, remains unused at Euro 2012.

"I have a doubt, but it's better to have one," the former Real Madrid coach said. "We have options and we'll try to pick the team that offer us the best chance. We've always had these doubts, it's not a question of it being the quarterfinals."

Spain was not letting news of France's locker-room outburst following the loss to Sweden soften the team's approach.

"In every household of every family, there are arguments," Ramos said, "and that doesn't necessarily mean the unit is affected."

The Spanish are the masters of keeping possession, but the French have the likes of Samir Nasri, Franck Ribery and Yohan Cabaye. They are comfortable on the ball, making the match potentially one for the purists.

"They like to hold possession, their midfield likes the ball, Ribery wants it," said midfielder Juan Mata, who has yet to play in the tournament. "If the game turns out to be like the ones against our past opponents, then we've been working on variety of ways to break them down."

Zimmerman recounts shooting Martin in vivid detail

NBC's Kerry Sanders reports from Florida, where new documents and video released by his attorney detail George Zimmerman's initial interrogations after shooting Trayvon Martin.

By Kerry Sanders, James Novogrod and Elizabeth Chuck

George Zimmerman, the man charged with killing Florida teenager Trayvon Martin,?told police he took his "gun, aimed it at him, and fired one shot" after Martin allegedly threw repeated punches at him, according to police video made public?Thursday.

Varying accounts of what happened between Zimmerman, 28, and Martin, 17, inside?the gated community in Sanford, Fla., on Feb. 26?have trickled out to the public via state prosecutors, lawyers and relatives. But on Thursday morning, Zimmerman's defense team released a trove of information gathered in the initial days of the investigation that includes a never-heard police interview with Zimmerman himself.

The one hour, 11-minute videotaped interview?was conducted?almost exactly 24 hours after the single gunshot fired by Zimmerman pierced?Martin's chest. Police used the interview to perform a computerized voice stress analysis, which detects psychological stress based on voice?patterns,?on Zimmerman.

Zimmerman, a neighborhood watch volunteer, had called police to report a suspicious person when he spotted Martin. In the videotape, he?walked officials through what happened next as he approached Martin.

"I reached for my pocket, and I was looking for my phone, and he just punched me in the nose. And I fell backwards, to the side, somehow I ended up on my back. He ended up on top of me and he just kept punching my face and my head," Zimmerman said, adding that he was?"screaming for help" as Martin allegedly pummeled him.

"He told me, 'Shut the f*** up.' I kept yelling for help," Zimmerman told police.

Zimmerman said Martin "took my head and slammed it into the concrete several times."

As they fought, Zimmerman said, his jacket and shirt rose up, revealing his gun. Martin?then said,?"You're going to die tonight," according to Zimmerman.

Martin then allegedly slid his hand down Zimmerman's chest, so "I just pinched his arm and I grabbed my gun and I aimed it at him and fired one shot. He kind of sat back and said, 'You got me here,' 'You got me,' 'You got it,' something like that. And I thought he was saying that he heard the shot and that he was giving up."

But Martin had actually been hit by the gunshot, and died a short time later. An autopsy report confirmed he had been shot at "intermediate range," and also found a small abrasion on his left ring finger, below the knuckle.

Key events in the Trayvon Martin case

4 months after Trayvon Martin shooting, Sanford police chief fired

A video re-enactment of the altercation, in which Zimmerman took investigators to the area where he first spotted Martin, was also released Thursday morning.

A Sanford police spokeswoman told msnbc.com that police would not comment on the results of Zimmerman?s voice stress test, as the case was still ongoing.

When police?found Martin dead on the sidewalk on Feb. 26, Zimmerman had claimed he shot him in self-defense. Zimmerman was treated at the scene for cuts and a bloody nose, and then?questioned before police released him hours later without an arrest, believing there wasn't any?evidence to challenge his account.

Authorities said Zimmerman's conduct appeared to be justified under Florida's Stand Your Ground law. But questions began to arise about whether there had been a racial motivation in the case, prompting protests in Florida and nationwide: Martin was black; Zimmerman's father is white and his mother is Hispanic. A special prosecutor took over the case, and Zimmerman was charged with second-degree murder on April 11.

Zimmerman has pleaded not guilty to the charge. He remains in a solitary cell in?Florida's?Seminole County jail.

Over the next 10 days in Eugene, two of the best-known American sprinters will try to qualify for a trip to the London Games. But while Felix heads into Olympic trials in good form, Gay has been struggling with injuries for months.

"Thirty," said Gay, who turns 30 in August, when asked how he's feeling.

He has spent most of the past year dealing with a hip injury. His first race back was in New York earlier this month, where he ran 10.00 seconds into a headwind and said he felt good. The men's 100-meter race, however, might be the most competitive event at Olympic trials, where three spots are available in each event and there are no concessions made for injuries, false starts or anything else.

Among those Gay will have to beat are 2009 national champion Michael Rodgers, Olympic bronze medalist Walter Dix, 2004 Olympic gold medalist Justin Gatlin and two-time Olympian Darvis Patton. And if Gay somehow gets through that gauntlet, Jamaicans Usain Bolt and Yohan Blake should be waiting in London.

"If I make the team, it would be good," Gay said. "Part of me just says, 'These guys are not going to sit down and let me come back after a year and give it to me easy.'"

Gay's first race is Saturday, while Felix takes to the track Friday.

Felix, a three-time world champion at 200 meters, is still trying to win her first Olympic gold at that distance. She tried the 200-400 last year at the world championships at Daegu, South Korea, but finished second in the 400, then followed with a fatigued third-place finish in the 200.

"Daegu helped me see for myself how doing the 400 first, then coming back trying to sprint, how that worked," Felix said.

Not well, as it turned out. So this time, she opted for the 100-200 double.

"I said from the beginning that what's most important for me is what's going to help me run my best 200," Felix said. "Bobby (Kersee, Felix's coach) felt running the 100 helps my 200, and for me, that's what it's all about."

But while she was making her decision, Sanya Richards-Ross was quietly going about setting up her own chance at the double that Felix opted not to try. Richards-Ross, whose specialty is in the 400, holds the world's fastest time in both the 200 and 400 this year and will try to qualify for both. Like Felix, Richards-Ross has unfinished business: She was a favorite in the 400 in Beijing but slowed at the end. She finished third, a result that left her crying under the stands at the Bird's Nest stadium.

The reason she's trying for the 200-400 while Felix chose not to is that Richards-Ross' key event is the 400 ? the one that comes first on the schedule at both the Olympics and at trials.

"Whatever happens in the 200 will be extra, a lot of fun," she said. "If it were flipped, I'm almost sure Coach (Clyde) Hart wouldn't want me to" attempt the double.
