Did you know that October is National Book month? Around here, you wouldn?t know the difference. Reading has always been such a simple and enjoyable way for us to spend time together as a family. We all know that reading to a child from an early age helps them to develop their language skills, right? I?ve watched my own son?s language develop at warp speed in part due to the?amount?we read together. Very recently he has taken an interest in learning to read himself.
I see the love and interest in language and?literature?blossoming in my little 14 month old girl?s eyes, more and more every day. Her natural interest is piqued and her little imagination is free to run wild. As it should.
There are two things which I love most about reading with my kids. One, the time that we spend together reading? It is precious my friends, precious. Where, in no uncertain terms, they know that they matter to me, and their Daddy, above all else. The second thing I love is all of the exposure to art through illustration and various styles of writing.
We?ve come up with this little system of?rotating?the books between the upstairs and downstairs bookshelves and switching up the smaller rail style book shelf units next to everyone?s beds for easy access. A major part of our book intake comes from our visits to the library, now a weekly trip with the arrival of fall.
Check out what we?ve got going on in our rotation this week!

Dr. Seuss's Sleep Book [Hardcover]
Every child should have a ton of Dr. Suess in their library. Wydham has been getting a steady does since the day he was born and when all other books fail to calm him; a Suess one does the trick with their unique, vivid illustrations and clever, rhyming ways. This one is on loan to us from library from this weeks visit and boy do we need this theme. A certain lad has been rebelling against all things bedtime.

Mommy's Best Kisses Board Book [Board Book] by: Margaret Anastas
This is a love-time book. Obviously, I kiss Abby's toes, belly, nose....essentially everywhere the book details a mama animal kissing their baby animal; I do so as well. It always ends up in squeals of laughter and lots of snuggles. A great bed-time book for her this week.

Owls See Clearly at Night/Lii Yiiboo Nayaapiwak lii Swer: A Michif Alphabet/L'Alfabet Di Michif [Hardcover] by: Julie Flett
Wyndham's fascination with letters and numbers is still going strong and he likes to have at least one alphabet themed book in his weekly roster of books. Michef is the language of the M?tis people, (a combination of French and Cree). Wyndham loves the illustrations and is fascinated with other languages in small, pretty doses like this.

On the Day You Were Born [Board Book] by: Debra Frasier
Oh to love this book. We once had a copy, that got torn by Wyndham and haven't gotten around to replacing it yet for Abby to enjoy just as, uhm, much. We have it on loan from the library again (we've done so a couple of times). A charming and beautiful book, that she reaches for first from the pile at bedtime.
Take it out from your library or Purchase this on Amazon for $7.95/toddler-times/2012/10/03/the-reading-times-of-abby-and-wyndham/#on-the-day-you-were-born-board-book-by-debra-frasier

Madeline's Rescue [Hardcover] by: Ludwig Bemelman
Wyndham LOVES Madeline books. We own a couple which have been on heavy and favoured rotation in the past, but he snatched this one up at the library as soon as he saw it.
Visit your local library or Purchase this on Amazon for $12.23/toddler-times/2012/10/03/the-reading-times-of-abby-and-wyndham/#madelines-rescue-hardcover-by-ludwig-bemelman

Welcome Song for Baby [Board Book] by: Richard Van Camp
Abby is enamoured and completely smitten with all things baby. Baby dolls, books about babies, she wants it all. It's one of her favourite words which she pronounces clearly and with glee (usually while squishing one of her baby dolls or running into my face with one for me to kiss.) The stunning photographs reel her in and she gets a kick out of how her Daddy sings the verses.

All the Water in the World [Hardcover] by: George Ella Lyon (Author), Katherine Tillotson (Illustrator)
Poetry beyond Seuss for little kids! And it's good! Really. This was a Daddy choice from the library this week. If Wyndham digs it and doesn't smash it down saying, '"I not like it"- it's definitely been toddler approved. The big mix of fonts that swirl with the flow of the water and the illustrations is what get him I think. That boy and his letters. It's serious. He also now talks about delicious water is and points to himself talking about how there is water in there. Excellent. I adore this book myself.

Ten Little Fingers and Ten Little Toes [Hardcover] by: Mem Fox (Author), Helen Oxenbury (Illustrator)
Again, anything to do with little babies and Abby is all over it. This classic book is so lovely as a plush board book with it's cute and quirky verses and gorgeous illustrations. Wyndham has memorized the words and now reads it to his sister. MAJOR bonus.

We Share Everything! [Paperback] by, Robert N. Munsch (Author), Michael Martchenko (Author)
Oh yes, there are some hard lessons (read, constant melt-downs) revolving around this message around these here parts. Wydham is constantly traumetized by Abby's Baby-zilla-ness and often has a hard time sharing. Anything. Which makes his love for this book rather amusing. We know he gets it, he just doesn't want to do it (the sharing), yet. The amount of times I've said in a sing-song voice, "We Share EEEEeeeeverythiiiiing"? Someone count to ten for me.
