Source: 15 burned bodies found at Algeria gas plant

ALGIERS (Reuters) - Algerian special forces on Saturday found 15 burned bodies at the desert gas plant attacked by al Qaeda-linked fighters, a source familiar with the unfolding hostage crisis there said.

An investigation was in progress to try and identify the bodies, which were found after the Algerian army launched an operation to free dozens of foreign and Algerian workers at the gas plant. There was no immediate indication of the circumstances in which those found on Saturday had died.

Justin Who? We Think Selena Gomez Is Better Off Single!

After several rocky months, it appears that Selena Gomez has finally given Justin Bieber the boot. At a Golden Globes after-party, the 20-year-old singer-actress was overheard saying that she was "done" with Bieber after their "awful" New Year's vacation to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. ("They had another huge fight, and Selena won't forgive him," an Us Weekly source elaborates.)

Little Mix: 'We wear the trousers in our relationships' | Sugarscape |

Sadly, they don't mean literally. We'd love to see Zayn in a skirt.

The Little Mix gals have proved just how fiesty they really are in their first ever US interview - revealing that when it comes to boyfriends, they wear the trousers.

Or as that line in 'Wings' goes: "If they give you sh*t, then just walk on by." Sorry, we thought that was quite clever.

Speaking to Seventeen after scoring a US record deal, Jesy said: "We all have boyfriends, we're not about letting boys take advantage of girls.

"We wear the trousers in our relationships; none of us have ever done anything crazy for a boy."

Oh Sam, Zayn, Jordan and Jordan - we hope you're listening.

That doesn't mean they're not all WELL IN LOVE though - Perrie went on to explain that their album DNA is actually all about falling for someone.

perrie edwards and zayn malik zayn and perrie

"When a girl first gets with a boy, that kind of romance makes you feel really giddy and happy," she said. "That's what DNA is about.

"Everything on the album is about our own experiences. We perform better when the lyrics mean something to us when we sing them."

There's no doubt in our minds that Pezza is one feisty lady, as our recent interview with her shows. 'I wouldn't mess me around, if I was a boy,' she laughs. Watch the video below and see for yourselves!

Nine more children or teens have died of the flu, bringing the nation's total this flu season to 29, health officials reported Friday.

In a typical season, about 100 children die of the flu, so it is not known whether this year will be better or worse than usual.

So far, half of confirmed flu cases are in people 65 and older, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported.

This year's season is earlier than normal and the dominant flu strain is one that tends to make people sicker. The flu is widespread in all states but Tennessee and Hawaii and is starting to ease in some areas, the CDC said.

Health officials say it's not too late to get a flu shot to help protect against the flu. Vaccinations are recommended for anyone 6 months or older.

Last week, the CDC said the flu again surpassed an "epidemic" threshold, based on monitoring of deaths from flu and a frequent complication, pneumonia. The flu epidemic happens every year and officials say this year's vaccine is a good match for strains that are going around.

The government doesn't keep a running tally of adult deaths from the flu, but estimates that it kills about 24,000 people most years.

Hawaii hometown backs Te'o after girlfriend hoax

LAIE, Hawaii (AP) ? People in small Hawaii hometown of Manti Te'o are offering support for the Notre Dame linebacker, after the story of his girlfriend and her death from Leukemia were revealed as a hoax.

No one answered the door Wednesday evening and no one appeared to be inside the modest, single-story wood home of Te'o's parents, Brian and Ottilia Te'o, in the small coastal town of Laie on Oahu's northern shore where Manti Te'o, an All-American and Heisman Trophy finalist, was born.

But members of the mostly Mormon community said they were dumbfounded, and didn't believe he would have knowingly perpetrated such a story. The town of about 6,000 people, roughly an hour's drive from Honolulu, is home to a small satellite campus of Hawaii's Brigham Young University,

Lokelani Kaiahua said Te'o's parents were her classmates, and she knew them to have strong family values they instilled in their children.

"I just don't see something like that being made up from him or having any part of that because they're not those kind of people," she said while sitting and talking with friends a few doors down from the Te'o family home. "Everybody's kind of like 'what is going on?'"

According to media accounts that surrounded Te'o this season, his purported girlfriend, Lennay Kekua, died of Leukemia in September. But on Wednesday, the website Deadspin.com posted a lengthy story saying there was no evidence that she ever existed.

Notre Dame officials then confirmed the hoax but were insistent that Te'o was only the victim.

Te'o is a hero and role model to many children in Laie and nearby small towns like Haaula, Kaaawa and Kahuku along the two-lane highway snaking through Oahu's northeastern coast.

Students at Haaula often wear Notre Dame jerseys with his number "5'' on them, and Te'o has returned to the area to talk to students about the importance of staying in school, said school administrator Makala Paakaula, 38.

"He always keeps giving back to his community," Paakaula said.

Te'o should be lauded for uniting Notre Dame during his senior year when he could have left for the NFL, she said.

"It's amazing how he brought together the whole school to become one ohana, one family, where they all belonged, where they all had a purpose," Paakaula said.

Many residents expressed anger toward whoever was behind the entire affair.

"If he got hoaxed, that's not his fault ? shame on them," Paakaula said, "because he has a very trusting, open heart."

Top players waste no time in Australian Open heat

MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) ? With temperatures well over the 100-degree mark, Serena Williams and Victoria Azarenka were in no mood to stick around on the searing courts at the Australian Open.

A dancing Azarenka and an ankle-weary Williams played back-to-back matches Thursday on Rod Laver Arena, both easy straight-set victories.

U.S. Open champion Murray also won routinely, beating Joao Sousa of Portugal 6-2, 6-2, 6-4 on Hisense Arena, the second show court at Melbourne Park.

"You need to be the one that's trying to dictate the points in these conditions," said Murray, who practices in Florida. "Miami is the perfect preparation. It's hot and humid there, although it certainly doesn't get up to 37 degrees (Celsius; 99 Fahrenheit). It was a good match to get done in straight sets. "

Despite the high temperatures ? it later peaked at 106 F ? tournament officials left the retractable roofs on both main arenas open because a combination of factors including humidity and court temperature didn't warrant making the venues a temporary indoor haven from the heat.

Ice vests and towels helped players keep their cool, and a women's tour rule allowing a 10-minute break between sets was invoked late in the day, tournament director Craig Tiley said.

"It's always the referee's discretion, but the lack of humidity helped us today," Tiley said. Australia sweltered through a week of record high average temperatures earlier this month, but the first three days of the Open were relatively mild.

Second-seeded Roger Federer, who could face Murray in the semifinals, got the luck of the draw and was scheduled to play a night match on Rod Laver later Thursday.

Williams went into Thursday's match with an injured right ankle. She didn't seem troubled by the ankle, but did finish with a swollen lip after hitting herself with her racket.

"It's OK," she said. "It's a war wound. I think it happens to everyone, but I have never busted it wide open like that. I was like, 'Oh, no. I can't have a tooth fall out.' That would be horrible."

Williams lifted her tempo on the biggest points, including when she finally won an 18-minute game to open the second set en route to a 6-2, 6-0 win over Garbine Muguruza.

"Usually I feel injuries after the match but, so far, so good. I felt pretty much better than I ever dreamed of expecting to feel," Williams said of her ankle.

She later combined with sister Venus to win in the first round of doubles, showing no signs of trouble with the ankle.

The top-ranked Azarenka pranced into Rod Laver Arena for the first match of the day, and said she's starting to find some rhythm after beating Eleni Daniilidou 6-1, 6-0 in 55 minutes.

"I felt like I'm back into the competitive mode," Azarenka said.

The No. 94-ranked Daniilidou only won 10 points in the first set and was shut out in the second despite having triple break point in the fourth game.

Azarenka had her friend and musician RedFoo in the stands watching and signing autographs, and said she went onto the court listening to a "great mix of disco music and a little bit of new music."

The heat didn't seem to bother 42-year-old Kimiko Date-Krumm, who advanced 6-2, 7-5 over Shahar Peer of Israel. She's the oldest woman to win a singles match at the Australian Open.

Other women advancing included former No. 1-ranked Caroline Wozniacki, No. 14 Maria Kirilenko, No. 16 Roberta Vinci, No. 20 Yanina Wickmayer and Elena Vesnina, who beat No. 21-seeded Varvara Lepchenko of the United States 6-4, 6-2.

Former U.S. Open champion Svetlana Kuznetsova beat 26th-seeded Hsieh Su-wei of Taiwan 6-2, 6-1.

Murray, who ended a 76-year drought by British men in Grand Slam tournaments with his win at Flushing Meadows last year, didn't allow Sousa a single break-point chance.

"When the sun came out, it was extremely hot. When it wasn't, it was fine. There was no humidity," he said, playing down the impact of the hot conditions. "When you get the combination of the heat and the humidity is when it's normally at its worst. I've played in worse conditions."

Among the other men advancing was 2008 Australian finalist Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, who pretended to do pushups to disguise a fall during his 6-3, 7-6 (1), 6-3 win over Japan's Go Soeda.

Australia's Bernard Tomic went through to the third round along with No. 13 Milos Raonic of Canada, No. 17 Philipp Kohlschreiber of Germany, No. 21 Andreas Seppi of Italy and Lithuanian qualifier Ricardas Berankis, who beat No. 25 Florian Mayer 6-2, 6-3, 6-1.

Tomic beat Novak Djokovic at the Hopman Cup and won last week's Sydney International, his first ATP tournament victory. He has won 10 matches in a row and has held 76 consecutive service games through that stretch.

He could face Federer in the third round, provided the Swiss star wins Thursday night.

"If the opportunity comes, it's going to be an interesting match," Tomic said of the potential Sunday encounter.

Djokovic plays his third-round match on Friday, while the featured women's match will be second-seeded Maria Sharapova's eighth career meeting with Venus Williams.

Sharapova holds a 4-3 edge, although Venus has won both times they've met in Grand Slams ? at Wimbledon.

AP source: Interior Secretary Ken Salazar leaving

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Interior Secretary Ken Salazar, who oversaw a moratorium on offshore drilling after the BP oil spill, will leave the Obama administration in March, Obama administration officials said Wednesday.

Salazar has run the Interior Department throughout President Barack Obama's first term.

A former senator from Colorado, Salazar pushed renewable power such as solar and wind, but gained the most attention for his role in the drilling moratorium, a key part of the administration's response to the April 2010 explosion of the Deepwater Horizon rig in the Gulf of Mexico. It was one of the largest environmental disasters in U.S. history and led to the unprecedented shutdown of offshore drilling.

Business groups and Gulf Coast political leaders said the shutdown crippled the oil and gas industry and cost thousands of jobs, even aboard rigs not operated by BP PLC.

But Salazar said the industry-wide moratorium was the correct call.

"I think we're in the right direction," he told The Associated Press during a July 2010 tour of the Gulf, adding that his ultimate goal was to allow deepwater operations to resume safely.

Salazar acknowledged that the drilling ban caused hardship, but he said his job was to protect the public and the environment even as the administration tried to boost domestic energy production.

The moratorium was lifted in October 2010, although offshore drilling operations did not begin for several more months. Some Gulf Coast lawmakers continue to complain about the slow pace of drilling permits under the Interior Department, which renamed and revamped the agency that oversees offshore drilling in the wake of the spill.

Salazar also approved the nation's first offshore wind farm, Cape Wind, off the Massachusetts coast.

On land, Salazar has promoted solar power in the West and Southwest, approving an unprecedented number of projects, even as oil and gas continue to be approved on federal land.

Salazar also oversaw the settlement of a multibillion dispute with Native American tribes that had lingered for more than a decade.

Salazar is the latest Cabinet secretary to leave the administration as Obama heads into his second term. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, Pentagon chief Leon Panetta, Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner and Labor Secretary Hilda Solis are also leaving.

The administration officials spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly before announcement of Salazar's plans.
